The opinions expressed in this article are solely my own and do not reflect the view of my employer or my preference towards any of the organization. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear Readers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, my friend called me and asked me if I was using my old laptop anymore, I was wondering what would he do with an old and bulky laptop, he explained to me as how valuable this \u201cold\u201d laptop is for some student in a low-income family in developed, developing or under-developed nation. He was intending to install open source OS and software on it and share it with an under-privilege student, such a noble deed it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I personally had three unused laptops in my home, I was wondering if it is an average number of e-waste in our homes, wouldn\u2019t it be an enormous problem if not dealt correctly? Wouldn\u2019t recycling be a perfect answer to it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I started thinking to myself that wouldn\u2019t it be wonderful\nif we could turn this idea into a non-profit organization and start collecting\nlaptops and shipping them to under-privileged students in the developed, developing\nand underdeveloped nations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I strongly believe that technology plays an instrumental\nrole in growth and development of any nation. It plays a vital role in capital generation,\neconomic growth, improvement of the quality of life and transformation in any society.\nNeedless to say, a laptop can change lives if used correctly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I read an extremely helpful paper on \u201cThe roles of science\nand technology in national development\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/18e7\/888823c372bdd7de5fd0bd43a88d5d85ea37.pdf\">https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/18e7\/888823c372bdd7de5fd0bd43a88d5d85ea37.pdf<\/a>)\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another fantastic paper from Harvard Business Review, \u201cCan\nTechnology End Poverty? \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/03\/can-technology-end-poverty\">https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/03\/can-technology-end-poverty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, easier said than done, I started charting out the steps\nto set the ball rolling, would look forward to your feedback to make it comprehensive\nand realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Chart out the objective Clearly <\/strong><ul><li>Need to clearly establish as what problem are we trying to solve (enabling the under privilege, reducing e-waste by promoting recycling etc.), in case there are similar initiatives in that geography it would be prolific to join them &amp; share a concrete plan rather than reinventing the wheel.<\/li><li>Who are we targeting, need to establish the baselines to qualify as who is eligible for this program <\/li><li>Choose a name for the initiative (Laptop for Charities \u2026 too basic?)<\/li><li>Register the Non-Profit Organization <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Call for volunteers <\/strong><ul><li>Draw a detailed organization structure, per geography, chart out roles and responsibilities).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Setup local contact points in the Geographies<\/strong><ul><li>\u00a0Start Small from Singapore, Prove the methodology, improvise and go big<\/li><li>\u00a0The local contacts will setup an always open channel with the beneficiaries to ensure that they are benefiting from this initiative <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Collect laptops <\/strong><ul><li>The target donators would be individuals, universities and enterprises (discarding their old assets) <\/li><li>Clean personal data<\/li><li>Install open source Operating System and open source based software<\/li><li>Tie-up with online education portals to stream or pre-package basic learning videos in the base image for the laptops (no point of laptops if beneficiaries don\u2019t know what to do with them)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Seek help \/ sponsorship from the shipping companies <\/strong><ul><li>As a part of their corporate responsibilities, I am certain that most of the shipping companies would be coming forward to ship the laptops at minimal or no cost to the beneficiaries. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Expand to the developing ASEAN countries<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you interested in joining this discussion and suggest points\nto turn this idea into reality, join me on the slack channel below:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/join.slack.com\/t\/laptopsforcharity\/shared_invite\/enQtODkwNTk4Mzk1NjE2LTBjZjE2NGQ1MmIzZDU0NjY5ZGFmODk2Nzc1NWUyYTkzNGViYjViZjAzMzU1N2FkM2EwZmViODIzMmQ1OWNiZmE\">https:\/\/join.slack.com\/t\/laptopsforcharity\/shared_invite\/enQtODkwNTk4Mzk1NjE2LTBjZjE2NGQ1MmIzZDU0NjY5ZGFmODk2Nzc1NWUyYTkzNGViYjViZjAzMzU1N2FkM2EwZmViODIzMmQ1OWNiZmE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Disclaimer: \u2013 This note was written by me (Mayank Nauni)&nbsp;in my personal capacity.
